Discovering Your Design

Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure" (Philippians 2:12, 13).

The man who seeks to pattern after any man's character will make an utter failure. Each person is to look to God for himself, to trade with conscientious fidelity upon the talents God has given him... It is in you, in you; not in another for you. You are to have an individual experience. Then you will have rejoicing in yourself, and not in another (2MCP 427.1).

So many God-given talents go undiscovered because young people are busy trying to imitate someone else. When you ask them what they hope to do with their lives, the list of possibilities often feels surprisingly small. Beyond becoming a ball player, a video-game designer, or a social-media content creator, few paths seem to capture their imagination. Creativity, curiosity, and critical thinking seem less valuable, while popularity and financial gain dominate their focus. In the process, individuality gets buried under the weight of comparison.

But when we pause long enough to reflect on our own experiences, we begin to see God's leading, His shaping, His timing, His fingerprints on our story. We start recognizing the unique gifts He has entrusted to us. Joy grows when we embrace the work He has called us to develop, rather than chasing the assignments He has given to others. And as we celebrate the success of those around us, it is not so we can imitate their path, but so we can be inspired to walk faithfully in the one God crafted for us.
